One needn’t have Sherlockian interpretations to deduce that the recent break-in at Gujarat University’s School of Social Sciences is lesser students’ shenanigan on the last day of exams; for the ‘thieves’ didn’t steal anything from a roomful of important documents but chose to destroy the answer sheets by dousing them, or simply, tearing them up.
Three days of holiday later, security guards on Wednesday opened the door to School of Social Sciences, only to find three rooms (on multiple floors) broken into, and answer sheets of the recently conducted MA examinations strewn all over. Several other important documents were rummaged over but strangely, nothing was amiss. Dean MH Makwana rushed to spot and subsequently informed GU Police about the incident.
“The room next to my cabin (on the ground floor) has many important papers, apart from the answer-sheets,” said Makwana. “They broke the glass door of the room and wrecked havoc all over! The room is now locked for police investigation but we believe that nothing has been stolen,” claimed Makwana. The rooms are used as assessment centres by professors.
Police investigations, meanwhile, revealed that all gates of the department are locked at night. It is suspected that someone scaled the first floor, using pipes or the neem tree in the vicinity, into the gallery and committed the crime. Cops have also recovered glass shards and noticed blood stains near Makwana’s office, pointing to the fact that the burglars smashed the glass door with his hand.
It is believed that the break-in is handiwork of a student who wanted to destroy ‘evidence’ of his poor performance in the examinations. The miscreants broke taps near Makwana’s office, which allowed water to enter the room, where papers were kept on the floor. All papers were soaked to beyond recognition.
