Popular social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook seem to be annoying the authorities in many countries.
The Mauritian government has recently issued an edict banning Facebook, apparently because of some references to prime minister Navin Ramgoolam. Social networking on the web has really caught on in the island; but because of its size, and government control, it is easy to regulate it. A
short note to the internet service provider said that it had come to the notice of the regulatory authorities that the site was “hosting comments of a diffamotary (sic) nature” and therefore had to be shut down.
Soon after the offending comments were in circulation among Mauritians across the world.
