Now the question is why has BJP suddenly raised this issue. There is a well-thought-out politics and strategy of the BJP behind this. If seen politically, North Bengal is a stronghold of BJP. Eight districts from Malda to Cooch Behar come in North Bengal. There are 8 Lok Sabha seats in these districts. BJP got one seat here in 2014, 7 in 2019 and 6 in 2024. In the 2021 Assembly elections, BJP won 30 out of 56 seats in North Bengal.

Historically, there has been a demand to make this region Gorkhaland. This region is very important from a strategic point of view. The borders of the North-East states including West Bengal are connected to China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan.
