A day after Karnataka director-general of police (CID) RK Dutta was recommended for a CBI stint, a Mysore-based social activist, who had filed a complaint against the state CID chief for fraudulently obtaining an LLB degree in violation of civil service rules, sought chief secretary’s permission to prosecute Dutta.

Activist Mallesh met chief secretary SV Ranganath on Saturday and submitted a requisition for the permission to prosecute Dutta. The Lokayukta court, hearing the case against Dutta for fraudulently obtaining a law degree, had asked Mallesh to obtain the necessary permission to prosecute the DGP.

Mallesh alleged that ISN Prasad, principal secretary to the chief minister, issued a no-objection certificate on behalf of the state government without updating the chief secretary about the cases pending against Dutta.

“This not only amounts to cheating but violation of service rules,” Mallesh said. Dutta was not available for comments. According to the complaint, Dutta took admission in the LLB course at the Arunodaya Institute of Legal Studies in 2009 without obtaining permission from the state government, a mandatory rule for civil servants.
