Bangalore MBA student commits suicide over college apathy

Pushpanjali ended her life owing to the college authorities’ lackadaisical attitude.

Disappointed on the rejection of her application by the Visvesvaraya Techonlogical University (VTU), a first semester MBA student allegedly ended her life by hanging herself at her apartment near her college in Chikkabettahalli, near MS Palya on Saturday morning.

The student identified as Pushpanjali(24) is from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. Her friends alleged that the promise made by the univeristy at the time of her admission — that she would be admitted to a course of her choice at the Sambhrama Academy of Management Institute was not met, and this dejection led her to take this extreme step.

“Pushpanjali was not allowed to appear for the first semester examination after the college management informed her that the VTU had rejected her admission on the grounds of insufficient aggregate marks in her qualifying examination,” her friend, Raviraj, in the same state, said. Deputy commissioner of police (North) HS Revanna said the college management had informed the police that Pushpanjali was undergoing a preliminary course to qualify for the MBA admission.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the college management had stated that Pushpanjali had not secured enough marks to avail admission to MBA. But the college had not informed her at the time of admission. “Pushpanjali had passed her BSc course with 45 per cent marks but VTU requires eligible candidate to obtain not less than 50 per cent. Pushpanjali was not informed of this at the time of her admission,” Revanna said.

Her classmate Raviraj said that the college management had returned Rs1.93 lakh that he had paid as admission fee on Saturday. “I was shocked to find that I have also not qualified for admission, only on Januray 17 — two days before the first semester examination. Even Pushpanjali came to know about this only then. She was always positive about things. It shocking that she took this step,” he said.

When her room mates slept at 5.30am after studying all night and woke up at 9.30am, they found her body hanging from the ceiling fan.

They called up the police, who immediately rushed to the spot. But by the time the police arrived, she was dead.

Another friend and classmate of her’s, Samir said that she had bid good bye to him and when he enquired about taking back the admission fee, she said she would collect it later from the college.

“There are four others, including her, whose fate was sealed by the VTU because of the negligence on the part of the college authorities.

The college authorities should have told us that students who did not get the required percentage of marks will not be admitted at the time of admission itself. Now, Pushpanjali has left us forever, but is the fate of the others?” he wondered.
