Priyanka Gupta, 29, teacher of mathematics at the Delhi Public School, Bangalore South, was found murdered at her second-floor house at Second Cross, Venkateshwara Layout, which falls within the BDA Layout at Hulimavu, Bannerghatta Road, on Tuesday morning.

Her husband Satish Kumar Gupta, HR manager with Infosys, had reportedly left for a morning walk at the time.

Police said that the train of events that they could reconstruct seemed to suggest that two people had posed as newspaper distributors and tied up the woman as she opened the door to them. They strangulated her and then slit her throat.

They fled after taking Rs2.1 lakh in cash and some gold jewellery from the house. The incident is suspected to have happened between 5.30 am and 6.45 am on Tuesday morning.

While Gupta had stepped out for his walk at 5.30 am, his wife had begun some yoga exercises, as she suffered from arthritis. Gupta had received a call from his wife around 5.43 am, asking if he had asked for newspapers, as some people had approached her. He had told her that he had not made any requests, and warned her not to open the door. After that, Priyanka’s mobile had got disconnected.

Smelling something fishy, Gupta had attempted to call his wife, but found her mobile phone switched off. He returned to the house, but the door was locked. He went to the house of his father Anand Kumar Gupta in the same area, and drove his father’s car to his office, so he could get a key to open the door.

He returned with a set of home keys to find his wife murdered. Gupta immediately informed Hulimavu police, who have registered a case. The couple had been married for four years, and had had no children.

On reaching the scene of the crime, police found a jerkin, a pair of shoes and a knife which they seized. The body was shifted to Victoria Hospital. A post-mortem examination will be held tomorrow.

Gupta said that Rs2.1 lakh in cash, which was kept in the house to buy a Santo car, had gone missing. Also missing, he said, was some gold jewellery. However, gold jewellery that was on the body of the deceased was found intact, leading police to notice major gaps in the account offered by the husband of the murdered school teacher.

Deputy commissioner of police (south-east division) BNS Reddy said, “The murder took place under mysterious circumstances. We have registered a case and found important clues. We will find the culprits soon.”

Gupta’s father said that his daughter-in-law was murdered while she was alone at home, as his son had just stepped out for a walk. Owner of the premises that the couple had rented only in January this year, Ravindra Kumar Mandal, said that he did not notice anything out of the ordinary with the young couple.
