The high court has issued notices to the state government, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and Karnataka Slum Clearance Board (KSCB) in a public interest petition related to the garbage disposal system in the city. Kavitha Shankar, a Bangalore resident had filed the petition in the high court contending that the city generates 4,000 metric tonnes of solid waste per day and the present method of its disposal is leading to pollution of groundwater and air.
She sought for a direction to the BBMP to appoint retired government officials or retired civil servants or ex-defence personnel to oversee implementation and enforcement of segregation of waste at every ward of BBMP.
Film subsidy case
The high court on Tuesday disposed of the petition filed by film producers seeking to stay the subsidy given to the films for the year 2009-10.
Petitioners Ramu Enterprises, Tulaja Bhavani Creations, P2 Productions and Sudhakare Films had contended that the government and the director for the department of information should reconstitute the selection committee for subsidy as the committee members had violated the Karnataka Rules 2011 while selecting the films.
The court observed that there was no material before the court to prove the allegations, and all producers were not made a party in the petition. The court has given them the liberty to file a complaint in a competent court.
Jail chief case
The high court on Tuesday ordered a four-week stay on criminal proceedings against chief jail superintendent of Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, TH Lakshminarayana. He was suspended from duty after he had released an undertrial, Masood on December 27, 2011.
On July 2, the court had set aside his suspension order. The state police then filed a petition contending that a mala fide exercise had taken place in the release of Masood.
Harassment case
The high court on Tuesday adjourned to September 25 the public interest petition seeking an enquiry by the Committee for Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace into the alleged sexual harassment meted out to female advocates on March 2, 2012 at the city civil court complex.
Sumana Baliga, a practicing advocate, had filed the petition. She sought a direction to the registrar-general for the establishment of similar committees in every district of the state. She also sought for a direction that all evidence and submissions pertaining to the incident should be produced before the committee.
