The high court on Monday issued notices to the BBMP, state government and CBI with regard to a petition alleging large-scale misappropriation of BBMP funds earmarked for development schemes.
The petitioners — KG Nagalakshmi Bai and others —filed a public interest litigation with regard to alleged misappropriation of development work funds in Gandhinagar, Malleswaram and Rajajajeshwari Nagar from 2008 to 2011. A report by the TVCC chief engineer was submitted to the BBMP commissioner. The report notes misappropriation of funds earmarked for development work.
This report is currently confined to 153 files of 10,109 files. However, in these 153 cases, the total extent of the money misappropriated is Rs1539 crore.
The petitioners further submitted that the BBMP comprises of 29 engineering divisions spread over about 800 sqkm. An inquiry into just 153 cases is just the tip of the iceberg, said the petitioners. They have sought a direction from the court to entrust the inquiry and resultant follow-up action to the CBI.
