Every child is talented and special in his/her own way, no matter what kind of disabilities he/she faces. Children at Kanteerava Stadium were determined to prove this right as they participated in the sports event organised for the differently abled, autistic children with multiple disabilities on Monday.
“My school had participated last time too, but I could not win. But I will win a prize this time,” said an enthusiastic Vishwajith, a student of Bala Manovikaasa Kendra, a school for mentally disabled children in the city.
The two-day event will host 36 schools from 13 cities across Karnataka. This is the second year that the Sports and Cultural Academy for Mentally Challenged has organised the sports festival. Competitions will be held in 100, 200, 400 metres, 400x400 metres relay, shot put, long jump and high jump for girls and boys independently. The events are also categorised into different age groups of 12 to 16years, 17 to 20years, 21 to 25years and above 25years. It will conclude on Tuesday.
Deputy BBMP mayor S Harish inaugurated the event by hoisting the flag of the academy and releasing pigeons and balloons to the sky. He said, “This is one of the best ways to celebrate Subhash Chandra Bose’s birthday and the event inspires me to do something for the mentally disabled in the state.”
He also announced that the BBMP has plans to increase the number of playgrounds in the city for children through a plan called “Marali ba Maidanakke” and will also be investing about `20 crore to promote local games played in the state.
