Failure in supplementary examination drove an SSLC student to suicide in Ashwathnagar on Thursday, police said on Friday. Identifying the student as Bharati, 17, police said she hanged herself from a ceiling fan when her parents, Thippeswamy and Rudramma, had gone out for shopping.

The girl had appeared for the supplementary examination after failing to clear it previously, though her cousin had passed in the first attempt. The result was announced on July 11. She was depressed over her repeated failure, police said.

In another incident, a 30-year-old man committed suicide in the same police station limits. Nagaraju, a resident of HAL Ist Stage, hanged himself in his rented house after sending his wife and children away.

Police said the deceased was an alcoholic, who frequently quarrelled with Bhavya, his wife for 10 years, over his drinking. He had been unemployed for the past two months.
