Home minister R Ashoka on Tuesday inaugurated the state police computer wing’s SMS gateway service which can save time and energy normally spend on police station visits.

The trial run of this citizen-centric initiative under Sakala began two weeks ago. Based on the positive response received, the police launched the service on Tuesday. The police department has already offered 21 services under the Karnataka Guarantee of Services to the Citizen Act 2011.

Once the service request is made or an FIR is registered, a 15-digit unique ID number is created and an SMS is triggered to the mobile number provided by the applicant giving him/her a unique number (‘guarantee of service to citizen’ number) and the name of the police station. As soon as the service is ready for delivery, an SMS is triggered automatically to the applicant to inform him about the progress of the case. “This is the most pro-active, convenient and cost-effective method of providing information to the people. It does not require any manual intervention,” Praveen Sood, additional director general of police (police computer wing), said.

Karnataka is India’s first state where, using the crime and criminal tracking network system, all investigation records from FIR to chargesheet to court proceedings are maintained online in real time. Documents related to investigations including FIR, mahazar (inspection note or a court note ), witness statement, case diary and chargesheet can be accessed by authorised officers with a click of the button in real time, anywhere, anytime, allowing police officers access to documents for investigation.

The state police has a distinction of having its own data centre and wide area network. All crime records are stored in real time as its data centre is located in Madiwala. All crime records since 1995 have been being digitised and stored in the centre, he said.
