Various organisations in Bangalore will be kicking off events, to highlight saving the environment and reducing carbon footprint.

Though the World Environment Day falls on coming Tuesday, various organisations in the city will be kicking off events, to highlight saving the environment and reducing carbon footprint, right from the weekend itself.

Go Cycling, Go Green is one such event that will take place on Saturday. The participants will cycle 33 kms across the city and raise awareness about the importance of reducing carbon footprint. It will start from Pride Hotel on the Richmond Road.

“This event is for anyone and not just cyclists. Bangalore is a city that has plenty of cyclists, but it is also one of the most populated cities in the country. We are stressing on the importance of changing the lifestyles of the residents of the city,” said Ahmed Shariff, one of the organisers of the event.

Over 150 cyclists are expected to take part in the day-long event. “We are promoting this as a way of life. We need to reduce our carbon footprint and we are also expecting environmentalists to take part in this event,” he added.

However, for organisations like the Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA), the World Environment Day will be like any other day of the year. “For our organisation every day is an environment day. But we will be starting our various academic programmes raising awareness among children on various environmental and civic problems,” said Dr Manjunath Sadashiva, director of CMCA.

One of the new programmes will rely on students to take the cause of the environment and reach out to their parents. “We are introducing a new programme called Ripples of Change, where children will be asked to discuss issues such as saving power and conservation of water with their parents and peers,” he added.

Even corporates seem to be betting on children in order to start crusading on behalf of mother Earth. The Green School Activation programme, organised by Godrej Ltd will reach out to 1,000 schools in the country and teach students different tricks they can resort to in order to save power, through various workshops. The programme starts on June 5.

Similarly yet another corporate, Tesco HSC, is planning on saving up to Rs21 lakh by getting their employees go green.
