Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa on Monday vowed to visit one government school every month and spend four hours with the children of the institution.

Participating in Shalegagi Naavu Neevu programme, as part of which he visited the government primary and high school at Rajanakunte in Bangalore Urban district, Yeddyurappa said: “This visit to schools will be part of my tour itineraries. I will spend four hours with children and their parents at one government school every month.”

The chief minister was accompanied by primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, MLA Laalaji Mendon and education department officials and the Bangalore Urban deputy commissioner.

The education department has organised the programme to bring elected representatives to government schools in an effort to make them understand the problems faced by these institutions.

“Most elected representatives do not know the status of government schools and hospitals in their constituencies. So, it would be good if they too make it a routine to visit the schools and hospitals in their constituencies,” said Yeddyurappa.

He said that Shalegagi Naavu Neevu was the best event to have happened ever since he became the chief minister. “I can never forget this day,” he said.

He also announced that a government PU college, an ITI college and a stadium would be developed at Rajanakunte.

Local MLA goes all out
to appease the CM

The government primary and high school had rolled out the red carpet for the VIPs on the occasion of the Shalegagi Naavu Neevu programme, notwithstanding a directive from the education department to keep the event austere.
The school was decked up like a marriage hall when the chief minister and the primary and secondary education minister arrived.

When questioned, school authorities said all the arrangements were made by local MLA SR Vishwanath.
Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa even lauded Vishwanath for the arrangements. “I should appreciate the MLA, Vishwanath, for all these grand arrangements he has made today,” Yeddyurappa said.

The chief minister, however, remained oblivious to the fact that the students were made to sit on the floor during the programme.

Little girl students had been sternly told to wear only sarees for the function and welcome the chief minister with poorna khumba reception (a traditional welcome ritual involving pots).

The chief minister received a salute from a local police platoon.
