State minister for environment and ecology Krishna Palemar has adopted a tiger cub at the Dr Shivarama Karanth biological park at Pilikula Nisarga Dhama near Mangalore.

Park director HJ Jayaprakash Bhandary said the minister in his message had expressed that he was keen to adopt the male cub, mothered by tigress Nethra. Once Palemar completes the adoption formalities, he can christen the cub. The adoption norms will take a couple of days and the agreement also includes a payment of `1 lakh towards the expenses of the cub for the next one year.

“I fell in love with the cub. He looked so helpless in captivity. I realised later that the cub could not survive in the wild. The least I could do was to adopt him,” said Palemar.
