The Parappana Agrahara central jail witnessed high-voltage drama on Monday night with the jail superintendent being attacked by a prisoner, Korangu Krishna, followed by police officers’ protest and later a protest by the criminal’s supporters against his shift to Bellary Central jail.
The situation returned to normal only by Tuesday evening after Korangu was shifted along with 10 others.
Trouble began on Monday night when Korangu opposed the police officers from carrying out routine checks.
He even tried to attack jail superintendent Krishna Kumar, but was overpowered by other officers.
Korangu was let off after a stern warning. However, the police officers in the jail were in no mood to condone Korangu’s frequent attacks on policemen.
They protested in jail on Monday night, demanding that Korangu be shifted to another jail.
They were adamant and withdrew their protest only after ADGP (prisons) and other senior police officers intervened.
But on Tuesday, the police officers did not show up for work and staged a protest from outside the jail, demanding that Korangu be taken to some other jail.
After a long-drawn discussion between top jail officials and the officers, it was decided to shift Korangu to Bellary jail.
Inmates’ outrage
However, this decision incensed Korangu’s supporters and 300 prisoners protested in the jail and the situation threatened to spiral into another bout of violence.
Korangu’s supporters were in no mood to listen to the senior police officers.
The situation was brought under control after Korangu's rival gang members and other prisoners managed to lock up Korangu’s supporters.
Korangu later demanded that 10 prisoners, who are his aides, should also be shifted along with him to Bellary jail.
After discussing the matter with top officers, chief superintendent of jail, TH Lakshminarayana, agreed to send them to Bellary.
While Korangu and others got into the prison bus to Bellary with the police escort, a rival gang pelted stones on the bus and police van, injuring three persons, including a driver. He sustained injuries on his face due to broken glass panes.
After Korangu left Parappana Agrahara, police officers returned to work.
