Thundershowers uproot 150 trees in Bangalore, bring traffic to halt.

In an irony influenced by nature’s fury on Wednesday, at least 150 trees were uprooted in Bangalore due to sudden thundershowers on the eve of Earth Day.

The three-hour rain fury brought down trees in Malleswaram, Nagarabavi, Govindaraj Nagar, Vijayanagar, Basaveshwaranagar, Rajajinagar, Girinagar, Hanumanthanagar, Koramangala, Indiranagar, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Sadashivanagar, Kumara Park, Mysore Road, Hosur Road, RT Nagar, Sanjaynagar, NGF, Sholaynagar, SG Palya, KHB Colony, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Chikkana Layout, Sultanpalya, Katriguppe, JP Nagar, Sapthagiri Layout and 11th Main, BEML 3rd Stage.

The thundershowers, which started in the evening, brought traffic to  a standstill. Fallen trees forced traffic diversions at many places.

In several residential areas, the trees snapped electric lines disrupting power supply and posed a threat to motorists and pedestrians with live wires hanging loose from their poles.

BBMP control rooms were flooded with calls. BBMP with the help of fire services, BESCOM and BWSSB cleared the mess the weather created.

Water-logging was reported in low-lying areas.

Electric poles crashed on 4th Cross, KHB Layout forcing the area into darkness. Falling trees damaged two vehicles in Hampinagar and Govindarajnagar.
