From now on, Bangaloreans can relish mango and jackfruits of different varieties under one roof for 45 days.
The city is going to host Mango and Jackfruit Fair 2012, which will start on Monday.
The fair is being organised by Hopcoms in association with the National Horticulture Board (NHB).
Mango lovers who have not tasted Dasheri and Langra, the North Indian varieties, can enjoy them at the fair.
“It is for the first time that we have a tie-up with the NHB. It will enable farmers from Karnataka to sell mangoes Alphonso, Raspuri and Mallika and jackfruits in various cities in North India and also facilitate the sale of mangoes from North India in Bangalore,’’ said S Shanmukhappa, managing director, Hopcoms.
For Hopcoms, it will be the first mango and jackfruit fair in Bangalore. The fair will benefit farmers as well as consumers. More than 800 tonnes of mangoes were sold during last year, said BV Chikkanna, president, Hopcoms.
“We expect to sell 900 tonnes of mangoes and 100 tonnes of jackfruits during the next 45 days. The fair may be extended,’’ he said.
Four varieties of jackfruits—Chandra, Tubinakere, Rudrakshi (red and white) and Madhura—will be sold to consumers.
“The USP of the fair is the arrangements made to sell good-quality mangoes ripened through scientific methods. These mangoes are not only hygienic, but also nutritious since we are not using calcium carbide for ripening them. We use ethylene for ripening them,’’ said Shanmukhappa.
10% off Hopcoms will offer a 10% rebate during the 45-day fair.
“We have made arrangements to sell mangoes and jackfruits at our 276 outlets in the city. We have also made arrangements for mobile outlets at HSR Layout, MS Building premises, Sundaranagar Layout at Mathikere, MICO Layout at Arakere, Kengeri Satellite Town and Mini Forest at JP Nagar,’’ he said.
Jackfruit cultivation is being done in 6,245 hectares in Bangalore Rural, Belgaum, Chikkaballapur, Chennarayapatna, Doddaballapur, Dharwad, Haveri, Mysore, Ramanagar, Shimoga and Tumkur districts.
