The husband, Bijoy Samuel, 33, allegedly attempted suicide by slashing his wrist, after murdering Ranjini Rajan, 25, police said.

A newly wed woman was strangulated to death, allegedly by her husband, on Friday at their rented house at Muthappa Block in RT Nagar, following her reported refusal to physical intimacy with him, police said.

The husband, Bijoy Samuel, 33, allegedly attempted suicide by slashing his wrist, after murdering Ranjini Rajan, 25, police said. Timely medical attention saved his life.

Police arrested Bijoy from a city hospital and produced him before a court. He was remanded in judicial custody.

The couple hailed from Thiruvalla in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, and had been working in Bangalore. While Bijoy was a human resources executive with IBM, Ranjini was employed with a city-based private firm. Police said they reached the city on Friday morning, after their April 24 wedding in Kerala.

According to a statement made to the police, Bijoy reportedly said that Ranjini had made her displeasure over the alliance soon after their arranged marriage. She had reportedly told him that she was not in love with him and also refused physical intimacy, police said.

Earlier in the morning, Bijoy’s father Samuel and brother Ajay Samuel had received the couple at the railway station, and dropped them off at their RT Nagar house around 8 am.
Samuel and his wife, residents of Bhopal, were temporarily staying with Ajay in Nagawara.

“Bijoy took the house in RT Nagar on rent only a month ago. He moved part of the household items to the new place,” C Munirathnam Naidu, assistant commissioner of police (JC Nagar sub-division), said.

When they returned with breakfast for the couple, the door was found closed. On seeing bloodstains on the threshold, they pushed open the door and found Bijoy with his left wrist slashed, and a dead Ranjini in the bedroom.

Police said Bijoy was conscious when his family members found him. They rushed him to the Baptist Hospital. Investigators said he had slit his right forearm also.

Investigators were suspecting that Bijoy might have strangulated Ranjini to death following an argument. He might have attempted suicide after realising that she had died.

The police took Bijoy into custody from the hospital, after he was administered first aid.

“An interrogation revealed that the couple had differences soon after their marriage. He said that on several occasions during the week after marriage, she had expressed her displeasure over the alliance. She had reportedly told him that she was not in love with him and also refused physical intimacy.

This might have angered him,” Naidu said.
