Many a woman has drawn inspiration from Sonia Narang, deputy commissioner of police (south). This bold and beautiful police officer stole the spotlight when she drew the ire of excise minister MP Renukacharya, after she arrested him for staging a protest in Davanagere.
So how does Narang manage to survive in a profession that is dominated by men, particularly corrupt politicians and subjective police officers?
“I experienced that tough part even while I was in training,” she says.
The training is tough enough for muscular, well-built men, leave alone women, who are far more dainty. But Narang fought her way through by outperforming her male counterparts. This is visibly evident in the designation she holds and the power she wields.
“Being a woman also helps as people are more courteous when they talk to me,” she says, adding that women should understand the pulse of people depending on the time and place. “This works great for women,” says Narang.
She hails from a family of police officers in Chandigarh. Her father retired as a deputy superintendent of police. Her husband, Ganesh Kumar, is currently serving as SP at Motihari district of Bihar. The duo meets once every three months.
Striking a balance
Her hectic and demanding profession, which compels her to be alert and occupied 24/7, leaves her with little or no time for sports and entertainment. Despite her hectic schedule, she manages to spend quality time with her son Shaurya.
“I want to spend more time with my son during his growing years. But, I can’t do that because of my demanding profession. However, with the time that I got, I have chalked out a schedule so that I could spend some quality time with him,” she says.
