There is not only a need for geriatric exercise classes, but also a need for geriatricians in Bangalore. Just like a paediatrician, a geriatrician is a doctor equipped to provide physical care to the elderly and deal with the physiochemical changes.
The elderly usually have joint problems, osteoporosis and other associated medical problems like hypertension, cardiac or respiratory diseases. Exercise helps them stay fit, but the foremost concern is to consult their physicians before joining a class.
There is no truth in the belief that regular exercise can be stressful or cause loss of energy for the elderly. Exercise helps the elderly develop muscles, improves joint mobility and reduces the rate of fractures by 40%, according to recent studies.
Regular exercise is also effective in keeping dementia or Alzheimer’s disease at bay. When you exercise, you tend to meet people and this addresses loneliness as well. It brings a very positive change in both physical health and mental well-being. It is advisable to choose low-impact exercises like yoga, tai-chi or aqua-exercises.
