Let alone the right to information; in what can be seen as blatant disinformation with a comic twist on the part of our health minister Aravinda Limbavali, he has put forth an astounding ‘discovery’ in medical science to ger rid of diabetes altogether: donate blood if you want to keep diabetes at bay — a theory that has been unceremoniously debunked by experts.

In a spirited effort at encourage people to donate blood at a blood donation camp organised by the Indian Red Cross Society and Mogaveera Youth Association along with G Shankar Youth Association in Freedom Park on Sunday, Limbavali said: “I have donated blood seven times. Later I stopped because I got diabetes. When I went to donate blood, the doctors told me I cannot donate blood because I got diabetes. So, to keep away from diabetes people have to donate blood.”

So much for hoping for correct information from a health minister of a state, who himself is a diabetes patient!

Health specialists have expressed shock at the statement made by the health minister. Dr Satish Babu, endocrinologist at BGS Global Hospital, said, “There is no link between donating blood and keeping diabetes at bay. It is a misconception and the information given (by the minister) is wrong.”

Dr SK Guharoy, senior cardiologist and diabetes specialist,  said, “In no way does donating blood keep diabetes away. As I am aware, there is no documentary proof till today about it. If any person says so then it should have been a discovery in medical science.”
