..And he would love to sing for Ranbir Kapoor in future, says Dev Negi

Zilla Hilela from Jabariya Jodi is not the first time vocalist Dev Negi has sung a track with a desi flavour. He also has to his credit the title track of Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Sweety Tera Drama (Bareilly Ki Barfi). Dev says, “Those numbers also had the spirit of UP and now with Zilla Hilela, it has been a really good experience for me.” Dev has collaborated with Tanishk Bagchi for his latest release, and is all praises for the composer. “Tanishk is an old friend of mine and he is doing an amazing job.” The crooner is also unfazed about the criticism that the latter has been facing for remixing songs. In his opinion, “Be it The Humma Song (OK Jaanu) or Tamma Tamma Loge (Badrinath Ki Dulhania), Tanishk takes the number to such a level that it matches the energy of the original.” Excerpts from an interview with the Aala Re Simmba singer.

Apart from Zilla Hilela, you are teaming up with Marshmello again after Biba. Tell us more about that...

I hope the song will be out very soon, since I cannot reveal much about it. Biba happened to me because of Pritam Da. He had approached me and, at the time, I was not aware that it would be such a big collaboration. After it was out, I was informed about Marshmello’s involvement and I’m very happy as it is my first international collaboration.

You started your career in 2013, but it took years for you to get songs in big movies...

Since I neither had a godfather in the industry nor belonged to a rich family, I had to face a lot of struggle. In the earlier days, I was not even aware of studios and have also sung songs for very less pay. And then after a lot of hard work, I landed my first superhit song Badri Ki Dulhania. Since then, my journey has been great.

You have also sung for Tiger Shroff (Mumbai Dilli Di Kudiyaan from Student of the Year 2), Varun Dhawan (Badri and Chalti Hai Kya 9 Se 12, Judwaa 2), Shah Rukh Khan (Butterfly, Jab Harry Met Sejal) and many more actors. Whom do you think your voice suits the most?

I think Varun Dhawan because of his body language and dance moves. But the most expressive song was Butterfly. I was extremely thrilled to see the amount of energy Shah Rukh Khan has put in the dance number.

Which actor is on your wish list to sing for?

I would love to sing for Ranbir Kapoor because of his passion for acting — I’m in love with his craft. And he is such a wonderful performer.

If you had a chance, which classic song would you like to recreate?

I would love to recreate one of my favourite tracks, Phir Wahi Raat Hai from the movie Ghar.

What’s next for you in Bollywood and non-film music?

I’m working on some singles and they will come out soon.
