With its unique plot, foot-tapping music and first-time pairing, Dinesh Vijan’s Stree has generated curiosity among the audience. Here’s what makes this film an interesting watch.

AN OUT-AND-OUT ENTERTAINER

The makers are exploring the hitherto-untapped genre of horror comedy with this movie. They claim that it will not only entertain viewers, but also send chills down their spines.

BASED ON A TRUE LEGEND

The story is based on one of the most commonly heard folklore of not heeding a call from behind if walking alone at night. Set in the rustic town of Chanderi, it tells the story of a bride’s wandering spirit, who roams the streets for four days during an annual puja. She calls out to young, unsuspecting men, and if they turn, she takes it as their acceptance to be with her, whisking them away forever.

This legend is popular in several states across India such as Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka as well as beyond our borders in Thailand. The mysterious disappearance of young males in these places has strengthened the age-old belief that ‘stree’ is at work, weaving her fatal spell over unassuming men.

CHANDERI IN SPOTLIGHT

This is the first time a Hindi film has been shot at real locations in Chanderi. The makers zeroed in on this town in Madhya Pradesh as the story demanded a rustic, rooted vibe. They have not only captured its beautiful forts and temples on celluloid, but also explored some of its spooky ruins.

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

In the age of remixes, composers Sachin-Jigar bring an all-original, quirky and versatile album with some foot-tapping numbers. Tracks such as Milegi Milegi, Kamariya, Nazar Na Lage and Aao Kabhi Haveli Pe are trending on music charts.

A CONTENT-DRIVEN FILM

Dinesh is known to back content-driven and entertaining films. From Badlapur to Hindi Medium and now, Stree, he has managed to strike the right chord with the audience by narrating homegrown and relatable stories. Using India as his landscape, the producer has touched upon smaller, rustic towns for his film, with Stree being shot in Chanderi. Incidentally, Amar Kaushik, who makes his directorial debut with this flick, also hails from the same region.

UNUSUAL PAIRING

The surprise package is the unusual pairing of its lead actors, Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, who are working together for the first time. The duo complement each other well, adding chemistry and intrigue to this horror comedy.

Stree, a Maddock Films production in association with D2r films and Jio Studios, releases today.
