Anil Kapoor didn't wish to share screen with this actor, got him dropped, director asked him to play villain, then...
Nana Patekar recently revealed that Anil Kapoor got him dropped from Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Parinda. The director asked him to play villain in the 1989 film.
Directed and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Parinda was released in 1989 and became a cult classic. The crime drama had Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor as two brothers Kishan and Karan caught on two different sides of a gang war. Nana Patekar played the antagonist as the ganglord Anna Seth.
In a recent interview, Nana Patekar shared an interesting story on how he was initially cast for Jackie's role, but then was dropped, and later rejoined the film as its villain. He said that Chopra dropped him from Parinda after Anil requested him to do so.
Talking to Lallantop, Nana Patekar said, "I was initially going to do Jackie's role. Naseer (Naseeruddin Shah) was supposed to play Anna (the part eventually played by Nana). Then Naseer backed out. Anil and I did a lot of rehearsals. I prepared for six months. I recently asked Anil, ‘You asked Vinod to drop me from the film?’ He said, ‘I thought Nana ko kyu star banau main (why should I make Nana the star)? It was obvious that you’d become a star had you played Jackie's part.' I told him, ‘Didn’t I tell you that whatever role you give me, I'd become the star anyway. Nobody would look at you." The Krantiveer actor was absolutely right as he went on to win the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for his terrific performance in Parinda.
