Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan

...in Coolie No.1 remake

After making an impressive debut with Kedarnath and striking gold with Simmba, Sara Ali Khan will be seen opposite Varun Dhawan.

The duo will star in the remake of Coolie No.1

The original, starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor, which released in 1995, was a huge hit.

Our source reveals, “Varun and Sara will share screen space in the former’s first home production. It will be directed by David Dhawan, who had also helmed the original. This will be the first film to roll out under their banner The One Entertainment. The team wanted a new jodi for the comedy and the Dhawans felt Sara would be apt for it.”

Incidentally, Sara was offered the part, much before she made her debut on celluloid. The source adds, “They were in talks for some time and had approached her even before Kedarnath hit the marquee. The idea is to adapt the
original and modernise it. The 23-year-old will step into Karisma’s shoes, but the makers are changing the character sketch a bit and making it even more prominent in the remake.”

This also means that the star kid will romance four top actors from Gen-Y by next year — she was seen opposite Sushant Singh Rajput and Ranveer Singh in her first two movies and will soon be seen romancing Kartik Aaryan in Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal 2.

Varun is currently busy completing his other projects. The informer adds, “He is almost done with Kalank and begins work on Remo D’souza’s dance film on January 22. He will wrap it up by April and plans to start work on Coolie No.1 around July. His and Sara’s bulk dates have been locked. The team is eyeing a festival release in the first half of 2020.”

What’s Coolie No.1 about...

Shaadiram Gharjode (Sadashiv Amrapurkar), a matchmaker, is humiliated by Hoshiyar Chand (Kader Khan) when the former goes with a marriage proposal for the latter’s daughters. Hoshiyar Chand insults them as he wants both his daughters to marry into rich families. Gharjode decides to teach him a lesson. He meets a coolie, Raju (Govinda), and together they pretend to be from a rich family. Hoshiyar Chand is impressed and he wants his daughter Malti (Karisma Kapoor) to marry Raju. This leads to a series of humorous situations.
