Yesterday, a new trailer for the Akshay Kumar movie Gold was shown for the IMAX release of the film. It was later uploaded on YouTube by Excel Entertainment. While most of the earlier song releases and the previous official trailer already gave us a pretty fair idea about the film and the overarching themes it presents, this trailer added something new to the mix.
In this trailer, Akshay Kumar’s character, Tapan Das, takes a backseat, and more focus is placed on his team instead. India circa 1930s was a tough time indeed, with the British trying to hold on for a little longer and the Indian freedom struggle getting more intense. In the heat of that struggle are the two strongest players in Tapan Das’ team, played by Amit Sadh and Sunny Kaushal.
Amit is privileged, strong and entitled. Sunny is humble, strong-willed and determined. Both butt heads as each wants to be the strongest player on the team, specifically the center-forward. Both also clash several times, each trying to exert their own influence on the other.
This new trailer introduces the element of internal conflict within the team, something which wasn’t highlighted to a great extent before. Tapan Das, here, is a conflict mediator rather than the star of the show. The rest of the trailer does re-use some of the same stills from earlier releases, and Mouni Roy and Kunal Kapoor are noticeably absent. However, the team behind the movie did succeed with making it seem like a much more interesting watch by adding the extra hurdle.
