After Hrs debates what does this premium seat says about the designer showcasing...
The front row is a coveted spot, where buyers, clients and editors sit to take stock. "Front rows all over the world are key to hold the attention of the media in general, but you are end of the day as good as your collection," says fashion entrepreneur and luxury maven Kalyani Saha.
While buyers are on the lookout for new and exciting talents, journalists are itching to find that original point of view and clients make their shopping list as and when models step out on the runway.
Designer Wendell Rodricks says, "A front row seat is a premium seat. Often, the show seating is adjusted with not just the front row, but the first three or four rows. In India, beyond the first four rows, the seats are termed as free seating."
Hence the front row says a lot about where the designer comes from, his aesthetic and also individuals, who're seated on row one.
"It’s the concept and designs of the show that say a lot about the aesthetics and growth of a designer. The fact that many designers today, are judged just as harshly by who sits in those seats than by the ensembles on the runway cannot be ignored. An elite front row does not necessarily define about where the designer comes from, but definitely enhances brand building," says designer Monisha Jaising.
However, today the front row in India has become a bit of a sham, where one finds individuals, who have nothing to do with fashion week, sitting and sticking out like a sore thumb. It's not unusual to spot a sponsor's wife, children and friends seated there, for whom, it's more of a family outing than anything else. Sloppily dressed individuals taking selfies on the front row has become a common sight. Has the front row lost its stature?
Fashion shows today, are superficial promotional platforms for brands to gain extravagant recognition among a wide audience. Presence of a diverse, elite and stylish front row at these shows from within or outside the industry certainly portray an exclusive brand image in the media. Although, I believe that people amid the front row should be influencers, who can relate to ideas and vision of the designer. Front row today, must have fashion editors, celebrities, influencers, buyers, renowned stylists and bloggers, but also the brand's loyal clients, eye candy, friends and family of the brand, who in some or other way contribute to the energy of the show as well as the designer. So, I think one should have an astute knowledge for the right mix of these front row guests to express and unveil to an audience, a desired sartorial brand image.
Seated on a front row is a luxury and a privilege. However, in recent years, the front row has been used by people, who do not merit a front row. People use an unoccupied front seat normally from sponsor seats thereby diluting the prestige of a front row. Internationally, the front row is not just a premium seat but the A listers on the front row are also dressed in the designers clothes as a tribute to the designer. Sadly in India, this is not the case
I think the front row has become a joke. You have bloggers who can't write one sentence in English correctly and all they do is indulge in hectic PR activities that wins them free gifts from eager designers. I think the front row should be earned. And must be awarded to those with experience and a point of view ie influencers. Designers in India invite their sponsors to keep the money rolling in and also have no discretion as to who must be seated where to give you that feeling that they are your supporters and also love your brand's aesthetics. But slowly, it is being infiltrated by women, who have the moolah and stars, who are has-beens and have no connection or brand loyalty. They just love being photographed.
I attend shows of designers whose creations I wear. Most of them are close friends too, hence I feel the need to be there to support them, wearing their creations if I can. Front rows are honestly to have your VIP customers, some potentials, influencers and editors, who are all equally important. India is celebrity driven and Bollywood is the biggest interest factor and also proves your prowess in the media, but honestly, it's not something I believe in. I would rather see them watching the show than walking, but showstoppers have become a trend and there is that surprise factor which works. All shows are sponsored and there is an obligation to invite the key sponsors which may look innocuous at times.
As a buyer, it doesn't really matter. The designer elicits a hype when the front row is nice and pretty. The general public would like to come for a Manish Malhotra show over an Antar Agni show. However, as a buyer, my association with the brand is more important and it shows your loyalty to the designer. I'd give that designer preference who I stock at my store. But I do make exceptions. For instance, I don't keep Sanjay Garg, but I went for his show because of the ambience and the off-site venue. Having said that, fashion weeks should give preference to the buyers when it comes to front row seating and they sometimes overlook it. It's a trade show at the end of the day.
