Karan Johar is currently basking in the success of his latest release Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which has earned Rs 300 crore gross worldwide. Starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the titular leading roles, the romantic drama marks Karan's return to direction after seven years since his last directorial was Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016.
Ranveer's Rocky and Alia's Rani 'switch' their homes at the interval point in the film and Dilji Dosanjh's Lover is played as the background music. In a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed that he personally called the Punjabi singer-actor to take his permission to include the song in his film.
Speaking to the YouTuber Sucharita Tyagi, Karan said, "I have to say, people have been so kind like Diljit, who owns the song Lover. I was told it is ridiculously expensive. I called him and I was asking him 'Paaji mujhe ye gaana chahiye (I want this song)". He wasn't understanding at first and then I explained that I want to use the song in my movie, to which he gladly told me, "Aap puch bhi kyun rahe ho, haq banta hai aapka (Why are you even asking, this is your right)".
Diljit Dosanjh and Badshah had famously appeared on the sixth season of Karan Johar's popular talk show Koffee With Karan, which was aired in December 2018. Lover is a part of Diljit's 2021 album MoonChild Era, which also included other hits such as Black & White, Luna, Vibe, Champagne, and others.
Talking about Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, apart from Ranveer and Alia, the film also features Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, Aamir Bashir, Tota Roy Chowdhury, and Churni Ganguly among others. The film was released on July 28 and is still running in theatres.
