Many kids of Bollywood's famed Kapoor family, over the years, have followed in their parent's footsteps and entered the film industry and tried to establish themselves. Some of them became successful, but some were rejected by the audiences. The daughters of the Kapoor family - Kareena and Karisma Kapoor - have earned a lot of names in the film world and are still a part of the industry. But, today we will be talking about the three kids of Bollywood star Shashi Kapoor who earned a lot of stardom but his children weren't so lucky.
Shashi Kapoor was one of the most good-looking actors of the 70s who worked in many noteworthy films throughout his career. It is said that Shashi Kapoor could have given tough competition to Amitabh Bachchan if it wasn't for his good looks, which often overshadowed his acting skills.
Shashi Kapoor made his debut as a child artist with 'Aag' (1948) and 'Awaara' (1951), where he played the younger version of the characters played by his older brother Raj Kapoor.
Shashi Kapoor, the third and the youngest son of Prithviraj Kapoor, made his debut as a lead actor in 1961 with Yash Chopra's 'Dharmputra'.
Shashi Kapoor married English actress Jennifer Kendal in July 1958. They had three children - Kunal Kapoor, Karan Kapoor, and Sanjana Kapoor. Jennifer and Shashi established Prithvi Theatre in 1978 in Mumbai.
After Jennifer died of cancer in 1984, Shashi Kapoor went into a deep depression from which he never recovered. He still tried his best to establish all his children in the film industry.
Many members of the Kapoor family were successful in making a name in films, including Ranbir Kapoor, but Shashi Kapoor's children could not succeed. Shashi Kapoor's elder son Kunal made his acting debut in 1972 with the film 'Siddhartha' and also appeared in Akshay Kumar's film 'Singh is Bling'. He was also a part of films like 'Vijeta' and 'Ahista Ahista', but his career did not last.
When his career in films could not take off, Kunal moved on to ad film direction and established his production house Adfilm-Valas. He has directed more than 800 TV commercials so far and is counted among the biggest and most successful ad filmmakers in the country.
Shashi Kapoor's younger son Karan Kapoor also tried his luck in films, but he too could not succeed. Karan Kapoor made his acting debut in 1978 with Shyam Benegal's film 'Junoon', later he also appeared in '36 Chowringhee Lane' and 'The Jewel in the Crown'. But, today Karan Kapoor is counted among the top photographers in the world. Karan Kapoor now lives in London.
Sanjana, the darling of the Kapoor family and daughter of Shashi Kapoor, now runs a theatre group called 'Junoon'. She also tried her luck in films. She was seen acting in films like '36 Chowringhee Lane', 'Salaam Bombay' and 'Aranyaka', but could not succeed. She also ran the Prithvi Theatre from 1993 to February 2012.
In 2020, she was awarded the French honour of Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres' (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) for her outstanding contribution to theatre.
