Mukul Dev returned to TV after 11 years with the historical drama 21 Sarfarosh Saragarhi: 1897, and now has been roped in for another yet-to-be-titled show, which is a police drama. The actor plays one of the leads as a cop. The serial is being directed by Mahesh Limaye, who was the cameraman for Dabangg. It is said to be produced by Salman Khan Productions and will be aired once his 10 Ka Dum is over.
While Mukul confirms that he is doing the show as “the role is irresistible”, he says he is not aware about who is producing the show. “All I know is I am shooting for the pilot episode and I play a cop,” says the actor, who had earlier donned the khaki in two films — his debut movie Dastak, and then in Wajood. The actor has a special connect with the role as his father retired after serving in the police for 45 years. “I love playing a cop. My father was a celebrated cop in the Delhi police. I have seen this life from close quarters, as I have grown up in such a family. There is so much to say as a cop, so many nuances and incidents, that I am keen on portraying one every time I get a role like that. This show gives me an opportunity to play a cop in a realistic zone — he is not a hero or villain — but real,” avers Mukul.
Incidentally, besides his TV comeback, Mukul is also making his debut as a script writer with Omerta. “I had written the script in 2004-5 inspired by a book that was an account of various journalists’ tryst with radical militant work.
One particular guy, Omar Saeed Sheikh, intrigued me because he was not befitting the profile of an Islamic militant. He was well-educated from the London school of economics — a brilliant student and a fantastic sportsman — to be involved in this world. That’s what made me pen down the story that reflects on some infamous calamities in which he was one of the key persons,” elaborates Mukul. While he wrote the basic storyline, Hansal Mehta did the screenplay and directed it. “I think it is too early for me to direct, right now I am concentrating on acting, writing a few stories and a novel. One of the stories I am working on is an espionage thriller,” signs off Mukul.
