Music composer Khayyam passes away at 92

Music composer Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi was admitted to a hospital after lung infection

Veteran music composer Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi left for the heavenly abode. Aged 92, he was admitted to the hospital on August 15 after lung infection. He was kept in Intensive Care Unit of Sujay Hospital in Mumbai, Times Now had reported. His condition, News 18 reported, did not show much improvement.

ANI has now confirmed that the music composer is no more. "Veteran music composer, Mohammed Zahur 'Khayyam' Hashmi, passed away at a hospital in Mumbai," their official handle tweeted.

Khayyam, as he was fondly called, is mostly remembered for his works in Umrao Jaan and Kabhie Kabhie. He turned 92-year-old on February 18, 2019. The music composer had also donated Rs 5 lakh to Prime Minister Relief Fund towards the families whose martyrs sacrificed their lives in Pulwama attacks.

Khayyam is also known for non-filmy works like Paaon padun tore shyam, Brij mein laut chalo and Ghazab kiya tere vaade pe aitbaar kiya. He is survived by spouse Jagjit Kaur. Khayyam worked in cinema for over four decades, won three Filmfare Awards. He was awarded for Best Music in 1977 for Kabhi Kabhie and 1982 for Umrao Jaan, and a lifetime achievement award in 2010.
