Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Lage Raho Munna Bhai was the first Indian film to be screened at United Nations. The 2006 release starred Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi in the leading roles of Munna Bhai and Circuit.

From Lagaan earning an Academy nomination for Best International Feature Film to RRR winning an Oscar for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu, there have been multiple films that have made India proud on global stage. But do you know which was the first Indian film to be screened at United Nations? It was the 2006 emotional drama Lage Raho Munna Bhai, that celebrated the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi through Gandhigiri.

In November 2006, the Rajkumar Hirani directorial became the first full-length Indian movie to be shown at United Nations. The film was showcased as part of the centennial observation of the first Satyagraha launched by Mahatma Gandhi in 1906 in Johannesburg, South Africa against an ordinance that imposed restrictions on Asians.

The Vidhu Vinod Chopra production had Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi reprising their roles as Munna Bhai, a Mumbai gangster, and his sidekick Circuit, from the 2003 comedy drama Munna Bhai MBBS. It also starred Dilip Prabhavalkar as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, whom Munna hallucinates throughout the film. Vidya Balan, Boman Irani, Dia Mirza, Jimmy Shergill, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Saurabh Shukla were also seen in pivotal roles.

Apart from making India proud at United Nations, Lage Raho Munna Bhai also won four National Film Awards - Best Supporting Actor to Dilip Prabhavalkar, Best Screenplay to Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani, and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Best Lyricist to Swanand Kirkire for the song Bande Mein Tha Dum, and Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
