Popular singer Shaan's mother Sonali Mukherjee has passed away. Singer Kailash Kher confirmed the news on a Thursday in a tweet. Sonali Mukherjee worked as a chorus singer for film songs from 1970 to 2000.
Sharing the news on his Twitter account, Kailash Kher offered condolences to the family and wrote, "Elder brother Shaan @singer_shaan's mother passed away. Prayers to the Almighty for the salvation of the departed soul. It is a prayer to Lord Shiva, the ruler of all three worlds, that our Shaan Bhaiya's family should get the strength to bear this sorrow. Eternal Prayer"
Talking about his mother in an old interview with a leading media publication, Shaan had said that her mother raised him and her sister Sagarika single-handedly when his father Manas Mukherjee passed away in 1986 when the singer was just 14-years old. His father Manas composed music for several films in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Adding that his mother used to be a chorus singer for film songs from 1970 to 2000, Shaan added, while speaking to Hindustan Times, “How she balanced both the roles of a single mother and working woman is a miracle. She always had a smile on her face. She encouraged me and Sagarika to do whatever we wanted to do. She never forced her will on us. Anuji (Malik; composer) fondly remembers that in 2000, when I had just got a bit of a foothold as a singer, my mom told the leading composers at that time that she wanted to stop singing chorus, lest I would get embarrassed if we had to sing in the same studio. Far from embarrassing me, I’ve always been proud to be her son".
On the professional front, Shaan has given his beautiful voice to popular songs such as 'Chand Sifarish', 'Jab Se Tere Naina', 'Hey Shona', 'Kuch To Hua Hai', and 'Behti Hawa Sa'. The singer has also hosted music-based reality television shows such as 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa', 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs', 'Star Voice of India', and 'STAR Voice of India 2'.
Shaan and Kailash Kher shared the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2007 for the romantic song 'Chand Sifarish' from Aamir Khan-Kajol starrer 'Fanaa'. Interestingly, Kailash Kher has sung just one word in the entire song, 'Subhanallah', which he has repeated in several variations.
