Today the films are made on a whopping budget crossing Rs 100 crore and only some of them manage to become hit at the box office. However, there was a film, that collected 5 times its budget despite being rejected by superstars.
The film we are talking about marked the directorial debut of a star kid and made him a hit director. Not only this, the film also won National awards and became a huge hit at the box office. It is none other than Dil Chahta Hai.
Dil Chahta Hai focuses on a significant transition period in the romantic lives of 3 college-graduate friends (Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna). It also stars Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni, and Dimple Kapadia. The film was made by Farhan Akhtar and marked his directorial debut based on Akhtar's diary detailing his trips to Mumbai and New York City, and a story by a friend of his, Kassim Jagmagia.
Farhan Akhtar originally wrote the movie by casting Akshaye Khanna as Akash, Hrithik Roshan as Siddhart, and Saif Ali Khan as Sameer. When Hrithik Roshan turned the role down, it went to Abhishek Bachchan. After Abhishek's exit, Farhan approached Aamir Khan. According to a report on IMDb, Farhan also approached Shah Rukh Khan for Siddharth's role, but he turned it down for unknown reasons. Saif Ali Khan initially refused the film but was persuaded by Dimple Kapadia to sign on. Manisha Koirala was reportedly offered Dimple's character, but she refused the role without even reading the script.
The film was made on a budget of Rs 8 crore and turned out to be a blockbuster upon release. It collected Rs 40 crore worldwide at the box office. The film won two National Awards including Best Feature Film in Hindi award and gained cult status.
