From Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh-starrer Teesri Manzil to Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, and Rani Mukerji-starrer Talaash, there have been a few thrilling and captivating murder mysteries in Bollywood. Another addition to this list is the 1997 film Gupt: The Hidden Truth. Directed by Rajiv Rai, Gupt starred Bobby Deol, Manisha Koirala, and Kajol in the leading roles.
The film has Sahil Sinha (Bobby Deol) accused of murdering his stepfather Governor Jaisingh Sinha (Raj Babbar). Sahil needs to prove his innocence after he is jailed. He is helped by his girlfriend Isha Diwan (Kajol) and best friend Sheetal Choudhary (Manisha Koirala) in his mission.
The climax of Gupt shocked everyone when Kajol is revealed to be the murderer (It's already 27 years since the film came out so this is not a spoiler). Due to its thrilling suspense and amazing climax, Gupt was a commercial success. Made in Rs 9 crore, the film went on to earn Rs 33 crore worldwide.
Kajol became the first actress to win the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role (This award was introduced in 1992 and was last awarded in 2007). Gupt also became the first movie to win the Filmfare Award for Best Background Music, which was given to the music director Viju Shah. The film's music became a chartbuster with songs such as Duniya Hasino Ka Mela, Mushkil Bada Yeh Pyar Hai, Mere Khwaabon Mein Tu, and Ye Pyaar Kya Hai.
The Rajiv Rai directorial also starred a bunch of supporting actors including Om Puri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Paresh Rawal, Dalip Tahil, Prem Chopra, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Sharat Saxena, Mukesh Rishi, and Priya Tendulkar. Gupt is considered among the best murder mysteries made in Hindi cinema.
