A still of Govinda film that barely recovered 1% of budget

This film was expected as Govinda's comeback, but when the movie was released, it became a box office disaster, earning 1% of the reported budget.

Govinda was called the star of the 90s. The talented actor gave a spree of comedy blockbusters in 1990. However, since 2000, the career of Coolie No 1 star started declining, and his refusal to few blockbusters dented his career further.

Today, we will discuss his last big-screen appearance. A film which was touted to bring back beloved Chi-Chi, and it was backed by his old associate. However, when this film was ready, it went through several difficulties. When the movie finally saw the big day, it became his biggest box office disaster, and the actor took an indefinite break from films.

Govinda's biggest flop that damaged his career was...

Rangeela Raja, the 2019 comedy-drama was directed by Sikander Bharti and written and produced by ex-CBFC chairman Pahlaj Nihalani. Pahlaj and Govinda were a sure-shot hit duo, as they collaborated for Ilzaam, Shola Aur Shabnam, and Aankhen.

Rangeela Raja was remake of Rajinikanth's film?

In Rangeela Raja, Govinda plays a double role of womaniser business tycoon Raja Vijendra Pratap Singh and a yogi Ajay Pratap Singh. The film, which was expected to bring the classic Govinda back, was the unofficial remake of Rajinikanth's blockbuster Netrikkan (1981).

When Pahlaj and Govinda made accusations of sabotaging their film

Rangeela Raja was initially scheduled for release on 6 November 2018, alongside Thugs Of Hindostan. However, the release date was later pushed to January 2019.

On December 2, 2018, the film's release was indefinitely postponed as the Central Board of Film Certification did not issue a certificate for the movie. Later producer Nihalani appealed to the FCAT (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal). On December 14, 2018, the CBFC finally cleared the film with only three cuts, instead of the original 20, and gave their approval to Nihalani to release the film by its 11 January date.

Pahlaj criticized the CBFC for not reviewing the film within 40 days of submission. He also accused Prasoon Joshi (CBFC chairperson), of 'favouritism', saying that preferential treatment was extended to big studios. Govinda even held a press conference and claimed that 'people are deliberately opposing his film release by not giving enough screen'.
