Today we see a multi-starrer film made on a whopping budget, and some even fail to impress the audience leaving producers in huge losses. However, in the 90s, multi-starrer films used to be made on a low budget. One such low-budget film was rejected by Aamir Khan.

The film we are talking about had a controversial song and featured three stars. Despite facing controversy for its song, the film emerged to be a blockbuster, collecting 8 times the amount of budget at the box office. It is none other than Khal Nayak. 

Khal Nayak is a 1993 action crime film written, directed, and produced by Subhash Ghai under Mukta Arts Ltd. The film stars Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff and was made on a small budget of Rs 3 crore. Earlier, the film was supposed to be made with Nana Patekar, however, as and when Subhash Ghai wrote the script, he realised Nana Patekar was not fit for the role, and informed him the same. However, this created a rift between the actor and the director. 

Not only this, before Jackie Shroff, According to IMDb, Aamir Khan was the first choice to play the role, however, he was reportedly interested in playing the villain. Subhash Ghai told him, he would not look good in the negative part and thus, Aamir rejected the film. 

The film featured one of the most popular Bollywood songs, Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai starring Madhuri. However, the song created huge controversy and the film was almost on the verge of not releasing because Sanjay Dutt was arrested and jailed in the 1993 Bombay bombings case. However, it turned out to be a blockbuster and collected Rs 24 crore worldwide. 

Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai sung by Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun at one point saw a ban from Doordarshan and All India Radio. However, it later went on to be a super hit. The whole soundtrack of the film became a chartbuster. 

Madhuri, in a 2014 interview with Amar Ujala, said, “There was a lot of hue and cry over Choli Ke Peeche. People protested a lot but when they watched the film, they went quiet. People loved the picturisation of the song and even those who had protested the song, they were applauding it.”
