Siblings across India celebrate Raksha Bandhan with much revelry. While sisters tie a sacred thread around their brothers’ wrists and pray for their long lives, the latter promise to protect them. In Bollywood, we’ve seen brothers move heaven and earth to protect their sisters. However, this Raksha Bandhan, the makers of Love Sonia are breaking tradition as they show how a girl is willing to go to any extremes to save her younger sister.
The film, which marks the directorial debut of Tabrez Noorani, tells the story of Sonia, who risks her life and travels through Mumbai, Hong Kong and Los Angeles to rescue her sibling, Preeti, from the vicious world of sex trafficking. The 17-year-old’s sheer determination is what heroes are made of and it’s clear you don’t need to be a man to be a hero.
The gritty social drama, which marks the big-screen debut of television actress Mrunal Thakur and features Riya Sisodiya, has a strong ensemble cast including Freida Pinto, Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkummar Rao, Richa Chadha, Anupam Kher, Adil Hussain, Sai Tamhankar, Sunny Parwar, Demi Moore and Mark Duplass.
Love Sonia, presented by Tamasha Talkies and Samraaj Talkies in association with India Take One Productions, Cinemantra & Dynasty Consulting Group, releases on September 14.
