The superstar couple with no hits together

This Bollywood couple, both superstars married to each other, have never starred in a hit film opposite each other

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are among the most successful actor couples in the current generation. Aishwarya is the richest actress in India currently and has been a force to reckon with at the box office for three decades. Abhishek himself has been part of both critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. Yet, despite working together in over half a dozen films, the two have never tasted success together, which makes them a unique case among ‘power couples of Bollywood’.

Abhishek and Aishwarya’s box office history

The two actors began collaborating much before they started dating each other. Their first film together was Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke, barely months after Abhishek’s debut with Refugee. But it was a flop. The two then starred together in two other films – Kuch Naa Kaho in 2003 and Umrao Jaan in 2006. Both the were films were much anticipated but did not work at the box office. This was followed by the only film in which both the actors worked and which worked at the box office – Dhoom 2. But the catch here was that Aishwarya was paired opposite Hrithik Roshan in the film. Aishwarya also had a cameo in Abhishek and Amitabh-starrer Bunty Aur Babli the following year.

In 2007 released the film that is perhaps the best of the couple’s career – Mani Ratnam’s Guru. The film was praised by critics and both actors received applause too, but it was not a commercial success, ending up as an average grosser. The two actors were married by the time Guru was released. The newlyweds starred in two more films together – Sarkaar Raj and Raavan, which again failed at the box office.

Abhishek and Aishwarya’s box office pull

However, the two actors remained successful when paired with other stars. During this period, Abhishek had hits in Dhoom, Bluffmaster, as well as critically acclaimed performances in Yuva. Aishwarya, too, saw success in films like Enthiran as well a phase of international success with Hollywood roles. Due to this, both actors charge Rs 10 crore per film, which means that if any filmmaker wants to cast them together today, it will cost them at least Rs 20 crore, a price that may seem too steep for a pair with no success behind them.
