The star kid who gave a Rs 400-crore film

This star kid was once trolled for her religious beliefs, but gave a Rs 400-crore hit in only her second screen appearance

Sara Ali Khan differs from the other ‘insiders’ of Bollywood in a lot of ways. For starters, she has not had the kind of upbringing that many others from her generation had. She has her share of privilege but the actress has fought through a lot to get where she is, the least of which is trolling and online hate.

Sara Ali Khan’s early years

Sara was born in 1995 to actors Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh. Her parents separated and eventually divorced when she was only eight. From there on, she and her younger brother Ibrahim were raised by Amrita on her own. The veteran actress resumed her career while raising the kids. As a teen, Sara struggled with her weight and had body image issues. During school, Sara once had a fight with a classmate which got her suspended briefly. After completing her studies in 2016, she took time off to work on herself, getting into fitness and eventually entering the film industry.

Sara Ali Khan’s trolling over her religious beliefs

Sara comes from a family of mixed faiths. Her father is Muslim while her mother is Sikh, and her paternal grandmother is Hindu. Sara calls her deeply spiritual and often frequents various temples and shrines around the country, often accompanied by mom Amrita Singh. For this, many Islamic fundamentalists have criticised her saying that as a Muslim, she should not visit Hindu temples. However, Sara has refused to be bogged down by the controversy saying that her faith is a very personal choice.

Sara Ali Khan’s film career

Sara made her film debut opposite Sushant Singh Rajput in the 2018 release Kedarnath. The film was a moderate success, grossing Rs 100 crore. But months later, Sara registered the first and biggest success of her career. Simmba, starring Ranveer Singh, grossed Rs 400 crore. The actress won most major Best Newcomer/Debut awards in the following year’s awards season. Since then, Sara has worked in a number of digital release films such as Atrangi Re, Murder Mubarak, and Ae Watan Mere Watan. In 2023, she again tasted box office success when her and Vicky Kaushal’s rom com Zara Hatke Zara Bachke grossed Rs 116 crore on a Rs 40-crore budget.
