Twenty-two years after he made the super-duper hit Indian (Hindustani) with Kamal Haasan and Manisha Koirala, Tamil film industry’s No 1 director Shankar is looking at making its sequel, which is titled Indian 2. The Hindi remake is likely to be called Hindustani 2.
Even as the world waits for the announcement of Kamal Haasan’s political party tomorrow, cinema lovers are looking forward to the launch of his next film with Shankar. One hears from a reliable source in Chennai that the filmmaker recently paid Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn a visit. Our source says, “He wants Ajay to play a top cop in the sequel.” No other details were available at the time of going to press. Whether Ajay bites the bait or not remains to be seen. However, just the fact that Shankar is said to have given him a narration is good news.
WHAT WAS INDIAN ABOUT?
Indian, which released in 1996, saw Kamal Haasan in a double role. Manisha Koirala and Urmila Matondkar also starred in the Tamil film, which was released in Hindi as Hindustani. The plot revolved around an ex-freedom fighter who turns vigilante and fights against corruption, while his son is involved in nefarious activities. The movie was selected as India’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards in 1996. It also bagged three National Awards.
2.0 DELAYED FURTHER
Meanwhile, Shankar’s ambitious project 2.0, which is the sequel of Endhiran/Robot (2010) and stars Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, is yet to get its release date. The movie won’t hit the silver screen on April 27 as reported earlier. The magnum opus requires a lot of work as it involves extensive VFX. That is the reason the movie has been deferred repeatedly. It was earlier marked to be the big-ticket movie during the Diwali weekend in 2017. It was then moved to Republic Day this year, and later rescheduled to April 27. The new date is yet to be announced by the makers.
