The National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM), the Bombay Stock Exchange, the National Stock Exchange and the Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority (Irda) are among bodies that offer certificate courses.

Apart from running certification exams, these institutions also offer full-time courses ranging from 6 months to 2 years duration. Irda conducts these examinations online as well as off-line. They cover the life and non-life insurance business. The target audience is people who are interested in working as agents for one of the insurance players in the market.

Irda mandates that a fresher undertake 50 hours of online training, whereas MBAs or chartered accountants have to undergo only 25 hours of training. For more details, visit www.irda.gov.in 

The NSE offers six courses — a one day course on the basics of the stock markets, two-day courses on trading, clearing & settlement for derivatives and capital markets, another two-day course on fundamental analysis and a four-day course on technical analysis.

The bourse also offers a host of modules on commodities, options, surveillance and issue management. The BSE Training Institute, meanwhile, offers five international programmes and 41 domestic programmes.

Several of the domestic modules are geared towards beginners, such as how to read an annual report and economics for non-economics. The institutes also offers advanced programmes such as forex risk management, working capital management, and econometric applications for financial markets.

The institute also offers sector-specific programmes such as valuation & modelling of the FMCG sector, the auto industry from an analyst’s perspective and private equity & venture capital finance.

The international programmes cover subjects such as demat & depositories, financial markets and surveillance risk management & securities settlement.

The NISM offers six certificate exams. On registration and payment of fees, you will be given study material to read and learn from. You can then select a date of your choosing for appear for the exam, which takes place online at registered NISM centres. The six certificate programmes are:

Currency derivative: Covering the basics of currency markets and exchange-traded currency futures market. The course also covers trading, clearing and settlement mechanisms related to the currency futures markets

Registrars to an issue and share transfer agents (RTA) corporate securities examination: Covers the role and functions of RTAs in the corporate securities issuance and transaction process

Registrars to an issue and share transfer agents — mutual fund certification: Again, dealing with the role and functions of the RTAs, but in the mutual fund issuance and transaction process

lnterest rate derivatives: On the Indian regulatory environment for interest rate derivatives markets

Mutual fund distributors examination: Legalities, accounting, valuation and taxation aspects underlying mutual funds and their distribution

Securities operations and risk management examination: On the basics of the Indian securities market, the different products traded and the various market participants and the roles they play
