There are talks of the government proposing to privatise four more airports in the country? What is your take on it?
The government believes that privatising will help in making airport operations better. This line of thinking does not always bring the desired private results. However, I suggest that they should also consider building the airports themselves and only let its management to the private parties. Many airports in the world have such kind of arrangement.
The freight forwarding agents complain that though Mumbai airport has turned into an impressive passenger terminal, the cargo division lacks the desired infrastructure because of which the trade is suffering...
It was discussed during one of the meetings. We have taken up the issue with the authorities. Things are set to improve, but can't tell you when. On the other hand, use of technology in smooth transition of freight is helping the industry a lot. Around 40% of the trade has gone electronic, especially in the past two years. It will definitely help in de-congestion of the cargo terminal.
IATA and other trade bodies keep coming with projection stating that India will become the third biggest market by 2029. But ground realities seems different. Most of the airlines are financially stressed, airport infrastructure is nowhere in place. On what basis are you projecting bright future?
The forecast is based on certain calculations made on the basis of economic, infrastructure and social growth. India has a booming middle class with increasing aspirations, and also the business environment looks upbeat. However, at the same time, the projection can actualise only when the government creates right kind of infrastructure and gives impetus to the industry with right policies and environment. Still, like any other business, some airlines will make success out of it, while others will fall to the side.
Travel agents are upset with IATA for being biased towards airlines. Please comment.
Yes, the agents are upset and we have been taking up the issues with the airlines. But I can tell you, instances of airlines losing money because of travel agents going bust are more than vice-versa. The airlines need to be cautious if an agent who use to give good business suddenly sees a dip in business. The airline should see a red in such a scenario. I can say that airlines and agents are partners in the business and should have mutually beneficial relations.
