Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp will stop working on certain smartphones after December 31, 2018. According to WhatsApp, some features on these smartphones will stop working after December 31. 

The news came at a time when people will be looking forward to send new year wishes to their near and dear ones. 

WhatsApp has become highly popular across the world and has over one billion downloads just on Google Play Store. Moreoever, 2018 proved to be an important year for WhatsApp, while the app launched a campaign to make users aware against spreading fake news, it also launched a number of services like group calls among others that became a hit among the users. 

Coming back to the latest development, we have listed the kind of smartphones that were not compatible for WhatsApp anymore and why the service will stop working altogether on them.

Nokia's Series 40 smartphones became success in the Indian market. According to Nokia itself, it had sold over 1.5 billion Series 40 phones in the country. But when Android smartphones came to the Indian market, the sales of these sets were drastically impacted. Currently, Nokia is not selling these handsets, however, if you are still using WhatsApp on one of these phones, it will stop working after December 31. However, if you like feature phones, you can opt for the JioPhone, JioPhone 2 or Nokia 8110 4G, as they all have support for WhatsApp.

"The decision was taken because we will no longer be actively developing for these platforms and some features might stop functioning at any time. When we look ahead to our next seven years, we are looking to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms that a vast majority of people use. These platforms/phones don't offer the kind of capabilities WhatsApp needs to expand its features in the future," WhatsApp said.
