Meet India's third richest billionaire in investment sector, he's an IIT alumnus with Rs 24,090 crore net worth

Karthik Sarma is an investment professional at SRS Investment Management. He founded the hedge fund firm in 2006. His company manages portfolios worth around USD 10 billion (nearly Rs 83,110) crore as of today. He is India's third richest person in the finance and investments sector, according to the Forbes Billionaire list. He is only behind Uday Kotak and Rekha Jhunjhunwala. 

Karthik Sarma's net worth

The 48-year-old has a net worth of USD 2.9 billion, as per Forbes. This is around Rs 24,090 crore today. He is currently at the 1027 position in the Forbes Billionaires list of 2023. Sarma is one of the top hedge fund managers in the world today. The New York-based Indian immigrant entered the billionaires club in 2022. 

SRS owns 43 per cent of Avis, a car rental company, through common stock and equity swaps. Sarma has served Avis's board since May 2020. Avis stock surged 456 per cent in 2021 which helped Sarma's flagship fund return 35 per cent.

He holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (1992-96). Later, he came to New York to get his master's in Operation Research at Princeton University. He worked for almost three years at McKinsey as a consultant. In Jun 2001, he joined Tiger Global Management as Managing Director and worked there for five years. After that in 2006, he founded SRS Investment Management. Currently, he is Managing Partner at the firm.
