MUMBAI: Delhi-based Jindal India Thermal Power, part of the Rs 2,500-crore BC Jindal group, will set up a 1,200 mw power plant in Chhattisgarh.

“We were earlier planning a higher capacity plant with two units of 660 mw each but the technology was not beneficial. Moreover, not many plants in the country run on a 660 mw boiler,” said a company official on condition of anonymity.

The company will now use two boilers of 600 mw each. “These are more easily available and technically almost similar to the 660 mw category,” he said.

He said Jindal India was also planning to use super-critical technology for its Chhattisgarh plant, but later zeroed in on sub-critical as they are faster to put up. “We are looking at a total power generation capacity of 2,400 mw by September 2012,” he said.

The company currently plans to set up three power plants in the next five years to reach a capacity of 5,400 mw. The first plant, to be set up at Angul district in Orissa, will have a total capacity of 3,000 mw and will be built in two phases. “The first phase will be complete by March 2011 under which a capacity of 1,200 mw,” he said. The next phase will come up in another six months and will supply 1,800 mw to the grids.

The Chhattisgarh plant will be set up in the Raigarh district on a 1,300-acre plot. “We hope to complete land acquisition within six months,” he said. The third plant, also with a capacity of 1,200 mw, will come up in Madhya Pradesh.

All the plants will be built at a debt-equity ratio of 80:20 with an estimated equity of Rs 1,080 crore.

The feedstock requirement of the Orissa plant will be sourced from a local coal mine and the company will share the resources with Tata Power and Monnet Ispat.
