Meet Harvard alumnus who leads Rs 3346 crore revenue company of Ratan Tata as chairman

Banmali Agrawala has been named the new chairman of Tata Advanced Systems (TASL), the firm's aerospace and defense solutions division by Tata Sons, the parent company of Tata Group. Vijay Singh, who has retired, is replaced by Agrawala.

Leading Indian conglomerate Tata employs some of the best leaders to keep business operations in its different subsidiaries running effectively. Many top level workers at the company, like Rajesh Gopinathan and Salil Parekh, have contributed to the booming corporate expansion. 

Banmali Agrawala has been named the new chairman of Tata Advanced Systems (TASL), the firm's aerospace and defense solutions division by Tata Sons, the parent company of Tata Group, Economic Times reported. Vijay Singh, who has retired, is replaced by Agrawala. The primary goal of TASL is to grow the defense division of the Tata Group and become the nation's first private military aircraft maker.

Who is Banmali Agrawala?

Banmali is not just the chairman of Tata Advanced Systems; he is also the chairman of Tata Electronics. Banmali holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the Mangalore University and has completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.

In October 2017, Banmali Agrawala began his second stint with the Indian conglomerate by joining Tata Sons Private Limited as the President, Infrastructure, Defence & Aerospace. He previously held the position of President and CEO for South Asia at GE, when he was in charge of the company's affairs on the continent.

He served as Executive Director (Business Development & Strategy) and a Board member of Tata Power before joining GE. Banmali has more than 30 years of international experience and is a seasoned expert in the Energy sector.

He began his professional life with the Wartsila Group, a Finnish production and service firm, where he worked for more than 20 years in Finland and India. He served as the managing director of Wartsila India Ltd., the global leader of the Bio Power Industries, and a part of the Global Power Plant Management Board when he left the Wartsila Group.

In the Tata Group, Banmali serves on the boards of Tata Power and Tata Advanced Systems Limited and is the chairman of organizations including Tata Projects, Tata Realty and Infrastructure Ltd., Air Asia (India) Ltd., and Tata Housing Development Company.

Indian aerospace production, military engineering, and defense technology firm Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). It is an entirely owned division of Tata Sons, the holding firm for the Tata Group. In the fiscal year 2023, the company brought in about $420 million, or Rs 3346 crore, in revenue, with a net income of $4.4 million, or Rs 35 crore.
