Meet man who leads Rs 68,451 crore company, earlier owned by Vijay Mallya

He is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore.

Abhijit Roy is the Managing Director and CEO of Berger Paints, an Indian multinational paint company, based in Kolkata. Roy has been in the top position of the company since July 2012.

The company was once owned by businessman Vijay Mallya. Now, it is controlled by Kuldip Singh Dhingra and Gurbachan Singh Dhingra. The duo brothers bought the paint manufacturing segment from erstwhile business tycoon Vijay Mallya’s UB Group in the 1990s. Presently, Berger Paints has a market capitalisation of Rs 68,451 crore as of August 18. The share price of the company was Rs 704.65 on Friday. 

Roy holds a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He also completed his post-graduation in Business Administration (MBA) from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore.

Roy joined Berger in 1996 as the Product Manager for the ColorBank Tinting System. In 2004, he became the GM Marketing. He was named VP Marketing in 2007, handling Marketing, Logistics and Consumer Services of the Decorative Business.

Later in 2008, he was promoted as Senior VP Sales and Marketing. In 2011, he was named the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Berger Paints and became a member of Board of Directors of the company. 

Next year in July 2012, he reached the top position of the company and became CEO and MD. Prior to joining Berger, he was associated with L'oreal. Berger has 16 strategically located manufacturing units across India (including the subsidiaries), 2 in Nepal, 1 each in Poland and Russia and about 162 stock points. The company also has an international presence in 4 countries (Nepal, Bangladesh, Poland and Russia).
