They worked hard and are among the richest people in the country. In this article, we will tell you about one such person who failed in Class 12 but is now the richest man in Hyderabad. He is Dr Murali K Divi, founder and managing director of Divi’s Laboratories Ltd. 

He is a US-trained scientist who founded generics maker Divi's Lab as a drug research firm 33 years ago. Today, his company is among the world's top suppliers of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), with a market cap of Rs 119000 crore as of July 2, 2024. Dr Murali is reportedly the richest man in Hyderabad. He and his family have a real-time net worth of Rs 64290 crore, as per Forbes. His company gets nearly 90 per cent of its annual revenue of nearly USD 965 million from exports.

The 73-year-old has experience of over 15 years in the pharma industry and has led various research and manufacturing teams globally. He worked in the US for several years, gained experience and then returned to India.

He holds a Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Kakatiya University, India. He is also a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Chemical Society. After 12th, he also failed to clear his first-year BPharm exam. He then aced his BPharm with distinction, followed by MPharm. Later, he joined Warner Hindustan as a trainee in 1975. Dr Divi decided to head to the US to try his luck with just USD 7 in his pocket. He came back to India in 1983 and founded Divi's Lab in 1990.
