This is budget time, and this has made medical experts and doctors lay emphasis on social security of common people. According to them, both the state and the Centre should focus on government medical insurance and public-private partnership (PPP) on priority basis in the proposed budget.  The state government's health policies like Chiranjeevi Yojna that is based on PPP model is believed to be working well. As a result, many poor people are benefitting from them. Gujarat being a progressive state with its GDP in double digits, the state can do wonders in healthcare sector by giving special exemptions and subsidies for developing medical tourism in Gujarat.  President of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Gujarat chapter, Dr Jitendra Patel, said: "There are multiple issues that both the state and central governments should take into account in the proposed budget. The state should upgrade technical support and equipment in government hospitals. It can also work out medical insurance policy for poor people."Also, the infrastructure in the government hospitals needs to be improved. To promote medical tourism, experts believe that the government should charge tax and fees by considering hospitals and healthcare as industry and not on commercial basis. This will allow the industry grow many folds and render better services to people, added the experts. There should be more nursing and paramedical colleges, and courses for technicians should be added.
